WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO POSITION MY GREENHOUSE?
Submitted by mrsmimiwhite on Thu, 04/15/2010 - 4:26pm
Hi! We just bought the 8 x 15" solargem and it will be delivered this week. We are trying to decide where to position it. I have a spot that gets full sunlight in the winter because the leaves are gone from the trees but in the summer it will get some shade. Is shade a good thing or a bad thing? I read that some of you think that the greenhouse is too warm in the summer so I thought some summer shade might be a good thing. Please let me know what you think. Mary

It depends upon your climate?
Hi Mary,
We live in hot country (south of Yreka in California). Summer temps are in the 90's routinely, sometimes into the 100's. We positioned our greenhouse so that it gets some afternoon shade from a wild locust tree. The locust is one of the very latest to leaf out (no sign of leaves yet, today on May 3rd). This seems to be working well for my seedlings that I'll put out mid to end of May. So far, I don't keep much in the greenhouse in the heat of summer (August) except tomatoes, but as I get more experienced, I hope to find other things that will do well there throughout the summer, so I'm thinking the afternoon shade will be a good thing.
I look forward to reading other comments and hints.
